SCORM® Version 1.2
Released in October 2001, the Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) Version
1.2 marked the end of the test and evaluation phase of new specifications. With
SCORM Version 1.2 the ability to package instructional material and metadata for
import and export was added. The content package is an integral piece for meeting
one of the overall requirements of the SCORM - 'interoperability'. SCORM Version
1.2 incorporated the IMS Global Learning Consortium's Content Packaging Specification
and expands it to include additional course structure capabilities. These XML-based
specifications provide a crucial link between learning content repositories and
learning management systems.
The initial requirements set for SCORM Version 1.2 were achieved and include the
following improvements over SCORM Version 1.1:
- SCORM Version 1.2 is now a multi-part
document composed of three separate books:
- The SCORM Overview
- The SCORM Content Aggregation
Model
- The SCORM Run-Time Environment
- The IMS Content Packaging Specification
Version 1.1.2 is now included and adapted for the SCORM through an application profile.
- The Content Aggregation Model
is updated to reflect the merger of the Content Structure Format (CSF) into Content Packaging.
The standalone CSF specification has been deprecated.
- The SCORM Metadata specification
is updated to reference the IMS Learning Resource Metadata Version 1.2.1.
- Clean up and Clarification of
the following:
- SCORM Run-Time Environment
Data Model
- Run-Time behaviors (affects
both Content developers and
LMS vendors)

The SCORM Sample
RTE describes the learning management system (LMS) requirements
for managing the run-time environment (i.e., content launch process, standardized
